In 2009 I launched a boutique iPhone app design and development studio, Clever Twist.

We learned a ton about how to design, build and sell apps for both clients and our internally launched apps.

Beer Goggles iPhone App

Beer Goggles answers the age-old question of “have I had too much?” Take a picture of yourself or a friend, shake the phone and Beer Goggles answers this question along with fun image warps you can upload to Facebook, save, or email/MMS the image to a friend.

Boost iPhone App

Psychologist Dr. Neal Olshan needed a way to deliver motivational audio clips to his clients who are work working through various performance anxieties, phobias and addictions.

Pretty soon I started getting inquiries for interviews for featured in industry magazines interested in my work – exciting!

Spot Apps

Sometimes you have the same maps search over and over. “Siri where’s the closest Starbucks?” “Siri, where’s the closest coffee shop?” “Siri, where can I get a flippin cup of coffee?” You get the idea. Spot apps were designed to house the largest database of coffee, burger and donut shops across America, sorted by location and complete with Google Reviews.

No idea how TechCrunch figures these things out, but got featured in an article on Yahoo! employees who created startups of their own. This was back when TechCrunch was the industry authority on all things tech, so pretty exciting!

Popper! iPhone Game

Popper! is the most popular app we released. For people who enjoy simple, casual games it offered fun and annoyingly addictive gameplay. Popper! was created using OpenGL.

“Clever Twist seems to have hit upon that magic combination of casual gameplay and an interesting mechanic to make a fun new game called Popper!”

Farm Friends iPhone Game

Mom is in the doctor’s office. Child is bored. Mom is in line at the grocery store. Enter Farm Friends. An entertaining app that gives parents a quick reprieve while the little one has a fun, educational moment learning various animal sounds, words and images!

I then had the honor of being featured in one of the design industry’s most respected online resources, Smashing Magazine. The article I wrote on “How to Create Your First iPhone App” went on to become one of their most popular articles published. Over the next few years I went on to contribute several more articles about iPhone and iPad app design.

Published  “How to Make Your First iPhone App”

The Smashing Magazine article stirred up so many questions from readers, I decided to expand upon the article and write a book about the details of each step in the process of getting an app from idea to App Store. It sold well on Amazon for several years.

Yearbook Yourself was getting a little old. So we went for even more funny and more options of pictures. I’m talking celebrities, mug shots – heck celebrity mugshots! It’s all in there.

In 2010 I was contacted by the Envato team about writing a series of articles on various aspects of designing iOS apps. This experience led me to creating even more in-depth training on app design and marketing on DesignBoost.

Around this time I read an incredible book called “Rework” by Jason Fried (founder of Basecamp). From the years of mobile app design files and knowledge I’d collected, I “reworked” those assets and created the Mobile App Design Kit. The aim was to help developers fast track the app design process with drag and drop templates and icons. After fees, my take-home was over $44k on this simple rework project.

At this time I was also preparing for the launch of Clever Twist’s first iPad app, iBrite. The success of the Mobile App Design Kit motivated me to learn everything I could about online marketing, landing page design – basically anything to help me sell my wares! 😍

In this process I became a loyal Unbounce customer, and they did a feature on the iBrite landing page design blog. I eventually went on to become a contributor to their blog talking about conversion centered design.
